Tuscan Food Porn – Part 2 (Why I No Longer Eat and Drive)

October 14th, 2011 · 4 Brilliant Opinions · International Travel, Random Things That Make Me Smile

I am notorious for eating in my car. Its an awful, disgusting habit… multitasking at its worst.  I used to brag that I could devour a three course meal while driving a SUV through city traffic.  I forgot to mention that most of the food ended up on my clothing or car seats.  Yuck!

The Italians are pretty serious about their food.  You see folks in the United States walking around munching sandwiches, french fries and donuts.  If you get on a city bus in Brooklyn y0u are at risk of being hit with a chicken bone or BBQ rib every time the driver has to stop.  Italians love good, fresh food.  Their portions make sense.  They eat slowly. They savor and appreciate every bite.  Meals go on for hours.  They are too sexy to try to drive and eat. Love my country… but on this one … I’m going with Italy.

Very unique observation that is. Though now I am a pro at eating and driving, but it still is disgusting. True about the bus incident, actually happened with me, but surprised after reading the Italian bit. No doubts the food is always a delicacy to have. Fresh. But is it true that they give due respect to food? The slow eating? If so, I am with Italy on this one too.

Roselle – The Italians, at least the ones I met, were really proud of their food. Shops would close for lunch/siesta from 1:30-3:30 in most of the towns we visited in Tuscany. During the work week, its impossible for me to do this… but on the weekends, I’m taking the time to slow down and have some really great, locally grown food.

I agree with you 100%. Let’s say that we, the Italians we give priority to life style. What’s life style? every body has his own definition but you see what I always say, here in Tuscany rich or poor, no matter, the table has its main role in your everyday’s habits as much as it is working out for other countries or going to a pub or I don’t know what. Food brings families and friends together, we socialize around food, we do business around food. Food is culture and not just a necessity to survive or to nourish our bodies with the necessary energy to go on. If you come to Tuscany come to visit us, I’m at the Certosa di Maggiano in Siena where we have a delicious restaurant which has been voted among the 50 best restaurants in the world. I agree, this means everything and nothing, but I can make you a promise, you will live a real culinary emotional experience!
