10 Things I Learned By Doing DietBet

March 18th, 2012 · No Brilliant Opinions · Random Things That Make Me Smile

Today is the end of the DietBet set up by my neighbor and fellow blogger @SelfishMom.  I’ve never been a fan of diets.  I usually just work out and lose the weight really slowly.  I weighed in this morning at 149.4 pounds (I was 155.8 pounds at the beginning of the Dietbet).   Bump the delayed gratification. If you want to lose weight you need to exercise and diet.  This is what I learned over the last 4 weeks.

  1. When I’m hungry I’m not happy.
  2. You can survive on 12oo calories a day. Its all about choices.  I ate what I wanted over the last few weeks. The key difference is that I really had to want it.
  3. MyfitnessPal is the bomb.  I never counted calories before – ever.  I weighed 169 pounds in June, 2011. With exercise alone I was able to get down to 160 pounds but it took 7 months.   With MyfitnessPal (which I started the first week of February – prior to the DietBet)  I’ve lost 11 pounds in 6 weeks.
  4. Seaweed is not a snack.  Don’t let any one sell you packaged beach algae.
  5. WaterWineTravel did not become WaterWaterTravel.  I didn’t have to  give up alcohol to lose weight but I did decrease my consumption.  Let’s hear it for moderation.
  6. Curvy girls don’t despair, men do like a woman with some skin on their bones.  Big P was very supportive until I lost my “black girl booty.”
  7. Drinking a lot of water will not make you feel full but it will make you pee a lot.
  8. When I have to get up five times in the middle of the night to pee I’m not happy.
  9. Skip the fake potato chip snacks, fake candy,  and  seaweed.  Go for those 100-calorie snack packs of cookies, chocolate covered pretzels etc. Satisfy your sweet tooth and move on.
  10.  I’m going to stop judging people based on their body size.  Losing weight is really hard. Its taken me 8 years to lose the baby weight and that’s with the benefits of a gym membership and access to healthy, nutritious food.

Now that I’ve lost a dress size, I’m working on being fit.  What good is it to look cute if you can’t touch your toes?
