Today we headed to the Bronx for the NY Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show. Although I was born and raised in NYC, I had never been to the show. (Sad trombone). Kudos to Jasmine B.an African-American mommy blogger who gave me the idea in her annual list of things to do for Christmas in NYC. I have three words for the show – wow, wow and WOW! The show features beautiful tropical plants, trains, and replicas of some of the finest homes, attractions and bridges in New York City.
The Holiday Train Show runs until January 9, 2011. Ticket prices, directions, information are available at the NY Botanical Garden’s website. A few tips if you plan to visit:
- Go early to beat the crowds. We had timed tickets for 10:00 am-10:15 am but were allowed to enter at 9:40 am
- Strollers are not allowed in the exhibit area (there is stroller parking). If you have a baby – bring a sling or baby carrier.
- The exhibit itself is indoors and it can get pretty warm – don’t over dress your little ones and think about wearing clothing that layers well and can be easily removed.
- Bring your camera (tripods not allowed!)
- After you see the show head over to the Gingerbread Adventures at the Adventure Garden. Our kids got to learn about the source of the ingredients in gingerbread cookies. They also got to decorate and eat their own gingerbread cookies!
- If you live in or near NYC, consider getting a family membership. We were able to deduct the price of our tickets ($80) from the price of a family membership ($120). For $40 we get all the benefits of being members – including guest passes, discounts and parking passes.
Spoiler alert – I took a slew of photos … you may want to skip these if you like the element of surprise. Enjoy!

love this write up!
Have always loved this show. You’ve inspired me to go see the DC version. Hoping it’s just as good.
Still feeling groggy from the flu that kicked my butt. Yeah!WOW is true. I loved it. I loved the plants. It does get steamy like a tropical rain forest. The staff was very accommodating. I will go again. Thanks Ann.
