Banana Boat and 101 Days of Summer Fun

June 24th, 2012 · 6 Brilliant Opinions · Random Things That Make Me Smile

I had the good fortune to be invited to an event sponsored by Banana Boat and held at the home of my neighbor and popular mom blogger @SelfishMom.  Banana Boat is the maker of popular sunscreen products for babies, children and adults.  Banana Boat is encouraging families to enjoy outside playtime this summer and to do so safely.  To this end, we were greeted with not only great foods and snacks but a bevy of outdoor games and  activities for the kids.

As  a mom  of color I was particularly interested in the SPF recommendations for brown and black skin.   Unfortunately, the extra melanin in dark skin does not protect from sun damage and it was recommended that we use at least SPF 30.

Since we enjoy lots of beach activities during the summer months and the sun was blazing in my neighbor’s back yard, I applied the SPF 50 like it was nobody’s business.    Black may not crack but it does burn.

Banana Boat is also asking that you pledge to have your kids spend more time outdoors playing this summer.  So pry the TV remote and video games from their hands and send them outdoors. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen at least every two hours.  For every person that takes the pledge,  Banana Boat will donate one bottle of Natural Refect Lotion to the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, which serves children with cancer and other serious medical diseases.

I’m planning on doing more biking this summer to get the whole family outdoors – even Big P is getting a bike.  Tell me what your plans are for more fun in the sun.

Rode about 25 miles today with SPF 50 applied twice. I was just shy of burning.

Wow – that’s pretty impressive riding. I’m hoping to do a mile or two without falling off!

I’ve gotten the weirdest burns while biking. Mostly top of thighs. Then everything else is pale! Now I’m so much better with the sunscreen. And no more bizarre tan lines. 🙂

I’ve burned only once or twice in my life … While sleeping on the beach. (That was in my former sedentary life.) But I’m trying be more physically active so I will definitely be using the sunscreen when I’m outdoors.

    Hello!
I found your blog while researching The Hamptons and Sag Harbor. I have heard a great deal about this particular place. And, my family and I are planning to visit in the future. Well, I’m glad to have found your article and your blog. Will visit, again!

Thanks for stopping by. I will be doing a Stella & Dot jewelry trunk show as a fundraiser for the Eastville Historical Society in Sag Harbor over Labor Day Weekend. I’ll post details soon. You can also follow me on twitter @waterwinetravel.com or subscribe to my blog. Oh, and if you visit this summer – don’t forget your sunscreen. Cheers!
