Beyond the Trash Talk – My DietBet Strategy

February 21st, 2012 · 2 Brilliant Opinions · Random Things That Make Me Smile

I’m two days into a DietBet with my next door neighbor.  DietBet is a social networking/ weight loss game that allows friends to set up a “biggest loser” style competition and win money at the same time.  The current game I’m participating in was started by my fellow blogger SelfishMom. Twenty of us have signed up and put $50 in the pot.  If you lose 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks you earn or split the $1000 pot.  Its a great incentive.

I have a plan and I’m feeling pretty confident.  I’m so confident I’m sharing my strategy now because I don’t think my competition can beat me.  Yep, I’m trash talking on day two.  I’ve lost ten pounds since last June (my weight was 169 pounds at that time) just by walking to work 3-4 times a week. No dieting. No calorie counting. No low carbs. Just plain old fashioned brisk walking.

To win the DietBet (and get into my swimsuit for my vacay in Puerto Rico) I have  continued my walking and added 4 sessions a week of biking. No I’m not going through those dodgy NYC bike lanes. Have you seen those ghost bikes all over town?  We purchased a stationary stand for my mountain bike so I hop on that baby right in the comfort of my living room. (Don’t be like my kids – put on your sneakers first.)

My bike gets converted to a stationary one

Then I spoke to my doctors and got the all clear to do a 1200 calorie a day diet.  This is actually pretty difficult and I fell off the wagon over the weekend. (Damn those Hamptons restaurants). Unless I drink a lot of water I get so hungry I could eat my hand.  I’m using myfitnesspal.com to track my food  and water intake, daily exercise, and measurements.  Myfitnesspal is free to use and has apps compatible with most popular smartphones.  Myfitnesspal.com has a huge database with caloric and nutritional information for thousands of foods – including packaged, frozen and common restaurant meals.  So I eat whatever I want but stay within my caloric guideline.  If I exercise – I can “earn” additional calories.  I’ve been losing about a pound a week using myfitnesspal.

I eat a hearty breakfast of oatmeal and fruit in the morning. For lunch I do low fat strawberry yogurt or a grilled chicken salad.  My wonderful hubby Big P prepares a low cal healthy dinner every night.  Tonight I had brown rice, beets, potato, broccoli and baked tilapia. It was fantastic and only 538 calories.

I’m starting the DietBet at  156 pounds … so I need to be 150 in four weeks to get a piece of  the $1000 pot.  After eight years of my gyn and internist prodding me to lose the baby weight – I’m almost there.  Please tell me what tips you have for getting rid of the  extra weight or comment to cheer me on  (I know my competition is reading!)

Cheers to getting “my sexy back!”
