About thirty minutes to one hour out of New York City, in any direction, fall is upon us. The leaves have begun changing from various shades of green to majestic oranges, rust, crimson and gold. This three to five week explosion of color occurs as the weather gets colder. I was determined to get out and enjoy the fall foliage before Mother Nature takes a deep breath and whooshes it all away.
We packed the kids up this morning with requisite snacks…granola bars, juice boxes, sugarless gum, veggie booty and headed out east. We drove down Atlantic Avenue to the Conduit, Belt Parkway, Southern State and 27/Sunrise Highway with the afternoon sun beckoning us to go further and further. The kids were snacking and happy and Big P has his ipod (9,000 songs deep) connected to the car stereo. I am shuffling between Money Magazine, AARP (how did I get on their mailing list?) and Cosmopolitan (someone has managed to write a full two pages on how to give a hand job!)
Big P is quiet and I ask what he is thinking. “I was just thinking how amazing the array of colors are. I love the big clumps of red burning bush alongside the highway. Just last week they were green.” The kids even got into it, pointing out the various colors along the way. My other favorite trek for leaf peeping is to go north along the Merrick Parkway to the Wilbur Cross Parkway into Connecticut.
We arrive safely in Bridgehampton, having left the “urban jungle” for other wildlife. It’s a cool two hours of slow fun. Where have you been travelling to “leaf peep?”
It looks so beautiful such a great season. But not to sure if i will be ready for this winter. 🙂
Well there is still lots of Fall weather to enjoy. Keep reading please!
