Mothers and Wanderlust

May 12th, 2014 · No Brilliant Opinions · Random Things That Make Me Smile

I’m emerging from my blue funk after the death of my mother last June.  I’ve been sad, angry, depressed and sullen.

Yesterday was my first mother’s day without my  mom.   It was a beautiful day in NYC and I filled it with activities from six in the morning until dusk.

I went to church with Big P and the kids.  It was a touching sermon. I watched the minister wipe away her own tears as she talked about the women who had chosen to love and embrace her over the years.  Her words have been  in my head all day. “The best way to honor your mother is to live a good life.”  My mom was a god-fearing, generous and kind woman who loved to travel.  I inherited her wanderlust.

Sadness is exhausting.  Yesterday,  I booked tickets to Los Angeles and Hawaii.  I think of it as a small tribute to my mother.  I’m looking forward to my next journey.
