My First Ever Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

November 25th, 2010 · 7 Brilliant Opinions · Random Things That Make Me Smile

My big sister is hosting Thanksgiving day dinner.  What a blessing!  I had two pies to make last night but was hoping to get to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  SelfishMom had offered us tickets for the grandstand seating at 34th street – but the line started at 7:00am – with no entry after 8:30.  Needless to say, we didn’t make it.  Instead we took the subway up to 81st  and Central Park West.  Although the parade route started at 77th street, this seemed to be the staging area for floats and ended up being a great spot to get photos.

I loved the gigantic floats.  My kids seemed less impressed – perhaps they were still tired.   In the future, I would probably avoid the beginning point on the route and the end point (Macys on 34th street).  Columbus circle would probably have been a good place to view the parade.  The crowd is pretty mellow. Lots of tourists and lots of cops.  Let me know if you have any tips for viewing next year’s parade.  (I know, I know…at home in front of the TV)  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  (If you click on my photos – they will enlarge for better viewing)

I still haven’t been to the Thanksgiving Day parade. As I rolled out of bed around 8:30, I was thinking to myself…”Who the hell is at that parade?” Now I have my answer. 🙂

    Awesome pictures!

I have never been to the parade, I like to watch it in the comfort of home in front of the tv, but would go if I had some kiddies that wanted to see it live.

Darbi – I have kids and they didn’t seem to be really into it! I usually see it on TV also, but I tell you its really amazing to see the size of these floats up close and personal. If there is bad weather, they can really do some damage to poles, street lights and pedestrians etc…as we saw a few years ago.

[…] my next door neighbor, who took these amazing pictures of the Jimmy Dean float.  She’s got some other great parade pictures posted too.  It was her first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, even though she grew up here […]
