I love stories about personal transformation and re-invention. A few months ago I had the opportunity to see a old friend from high school, Dr. Celeste Williams. Celeste is a mother, physician and entrepreneur who is the brains behind Wear Adinkra, a line of self-affirming, organic apparel for men, women and children. Ten years ago, Celeste was a successful practicing physician. Suddenly she became ill and found she was unable to continue to work as a medical practitioner. Celeste was still interested in public health and promoting healthy lifestyles and started this eco-friendly apparel line.
Adinkra symbols are used by the Akan people of West Africa to communicate proverbs, philosophy, human character and behavior. Celeste had stopped by to talk with me about blogging and social media. But we made her bring in some inventory from her car. We were really impressed by the quality of the fabric and my children were drawn by the vibrant colors. Interestingly, my kids did not just choose tanks and tees based on color, but were analyzing the Adinkra symbols to see which one applied to their lives. I call that self-affirmation in action.
Celeste also gave me a tip on feeling good and living well. For that extra feeling of luxury while you sleep, Celeste advised upgrading my sheets and bedding to organic cotton. Nothing feels better on the skin than organic cotton. I’m also finding that the itchiness and skin sensitivity I noticed with other brands is gone.
A few pictures from her clothing line.
